Chelsea have posted a record-breaking £262m pre-tax loss — the largest in Premier League history — despite revenues of nearly £500m and a trophy-laden season.
Chelsea have announced a record pre-tax loss for a Premier League club. The £262 million deficit for the 2024/25 season surpasses Manchester City's previous record of £179.5 million, registered in 2011. These figures are all the more striking given that the club simultaneously reported revenues of £490.9 million — the second highest in Chelsea's history.
Last season, the Blues won the Conference League, finished fourth in the Premier League, and subsequently lifted the Club World Cup trophy.
The club insists it continues to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), which permit losses of up to £105 million over a three-year period — a calculation that differs from the headline pre-tax loss figure. Chelsea have spent over £1 billion on players since BlueCo took over the club, with numerous young players signed on long-term contracts to spread costs over time. UEFA fined the London club £26.7 million at the start of the season for breaching squad cost ratio rules and placed them under a three-year monitoring period.
Chelsea believe revenues will reach record levels in their next set of accounts, which will include an additional £85 million earned from the Club World Cup, plus approximately £80 million in broadcasting revenue from their Champions League campaign. Projected revenues for the following season stand at £700 million.
